RSM and the Bright Future Ahead
Increasing Investment and collaboration in remote systems management (RSM) spell a bright future for home technology professionals. Here’s why…
Back in August of last year, we published the industry’s first-ever exhaustive study of the remote systems management (RSM) landscape. Our belief at OneVision is that remote service and support will play a vital role in the future of our industry; the ongoing interest that The Insider’s Guide to Remote Systems Management continues to generate proves that plenty of others feel the same way.
Having completed the guide (though it’s due for an update, stay tuned!), one of the key conclusions we came to internally was that a growing level of collaboration and investment across the space would continue to push the category forward. This January, two important developments bear that theory out. Control4’s acquisition of Ihiji along with our recently-unveiled partnership at OneVision with Domotz.
A Maturing Landscape
When we launched the OneVision Platform just under two years ago, we knew RSM would play an important role in our offering and the future of our industry as a whole. As an Ihiji dealer and (now-former) investor in the company, I was very familiar with their technology. The maturity of their product, especially in the areas of permissions, security, and notification management, combined with my relationships at the company made supporting Ihiji as the initial RSM solution on our service platform a no-brainer.
Combined with the growing investments being made, the increased spirit of collaboration by manufacturers and RSM providers clearly shows that these companies are dedicated to the continual enhancement of their offerings, to the benefit of HTPs and consumers alike.
Supporting only one RSM solution, however, was never our intent. As our business at OneVision has grown, we’ve collaborated with various RSM providers on solving some of the unique challenges to RSM adoption at scale. We have watched with excitement as solutions in addition to Ihiji have gained momentum. As the feature sets of these platforms continue to expand, adding them to our arsenal is a natural next step.
OneVision and Domotz – All About Collaboration
The increasing maturity of the RSM category has presented integrators with several strong options to choose from for some time now. However, the scale at which we operate at OneVision (fielding over 2,000 support events a month and growing) requires us to methodically evaluate new technologies to ensure they meet our requirements. Domotz worked closely with us over the last few months to build the requisite relationship needed in order for our two companies to work together. We’re excited to announce that we’re now able to fully support home technology professionals (HTPs) using Domotz.

Control4 – Raising the Bar
In early January, Control4 announced their acquisition of Ihiji, an early pioneer of remote systems management (RSM) technology. The Ihiji development team is now a part of Control4’s Networking group and they together will be unifying the two technologies. According to Control4, the new unified RSM platform will be available later this year, which means that we will soon be able to support HTPs using Bakpak as well.
Control4’s acquisition of Ihiji is a clear indication that they see RSM as a critical component to the long-term success of their dealers. Their plan to merge two leading platforms into a unified solution, combined with the resources a company of their size can commit, is sure to raise the bar in the category.
What does the future hold?
At OneVision, we have always believed deeply in the importance of RSM. These tools and platforms unlock operational efficiencies for HTPs and value-add services that enhance the client experience. They also pave the way for all HTPs to add technology management services to their service offerings to create a new revenue stream, an opportunity I believe represents a vital component to the future of the industry.
The increased amount of investment in the RSM space bodes well for the future of our industry. Between the combined platform of Bakpak and Ihiji, Domotz, and SnapAV’s OvrC Pro, HTPs can now select from three very mature and robust RSM offerings. Combined with the growing investments being made, the increased spirit of collaboration by manufacturers and RSM providers clearly shows that these companies are dedicated to the continual enhancement of their offerings, to the benefit of HTPs and consumers alike.
